History

Peonies were used as medicinal plants in ancient times and were very popular in ancient Greek and Chinese civilizations. The Latin name Paeonia probably comes from the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius. Centuries later, the medicinal properties of peonies were also widely written about in the Middle Ages. The peony has always remained popular, although later this was more due to the fact that the peony produces very beautiful flowers and is much easier to care for than a common rose. There are now countless varieties of peonies in all sorts of colors, shapes and sizes.

Care

It is important to choose the right spot in the garden for this plant. Plant a peony in the open ground and choose a sunny to semi-shady spot with well-draining soil. A peony needs space to grow.

Peonies are large, heavy flowers. It is a good idea to support the plant by using a support ring or stakes.

Fertilize the plant twice a year to stimulate growth, in autumn and early spring. In spring, also prune away any remaining leaves and stems.

Winter Care

Peonies are hardy when planted at a good depth. When planting, make sure there is about 5 centimeters of soil on top of the plant, which is enough insulation for our Dutch winters.

Flowers

Peonies are popular cut flowers and you too can cut peonies from your own garden next season. In the first season, the peony in your garden will still need to acclimatize and will then produce 3 or 4 flowers per plant. The following year, many more flowers will appear. The longer you have a peony in your garden, the more beautiful it will return every year and the more flowers it will produce.

If you take good care of your peony plant, it can easily live to be 100 years old.
