What is a root tuber?

The land plants we grow, sell, and ship as bare-root tubers, also known as rhizomes, are all the same product: a land plant that you receive as a tuber at home and can plant directly into the ground. You can compare this to planting a tulip bulb.

Watch the video below for an explanation of our peony tubers.

The Root Tuber

The tuber is the part of the perennial plant that remains underground after the above-ground growth dies back in winter. Due to the natural transition of the seasons, all energy is stored underground in this tuber.

This allows the plant to survive the winter well and use this stored energy in spring to produce stems, leaves, and flowers again.

Highest quality

Many of our land plants, such as our peonies, are shipped as bare-root tubers. We harvest the plants from the field in the autumn and then send them directly to you during our shipping weeks. This ensures you receive a land plant of the highest quality!
