The Daylily or Hemerocallis is a great plant for any garden or balcony. Read all about the Daylily here and discover how easy this plant is to care for!
History
The daylily originally comes from East Asia and probably arrived in Europe via the Silk Road (before 1500). However, it only received its botanical name Hemerocallis in 1753 from the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus. Because it is a strong plant that thrives in many climates, the Daylily was spread all over the world in the 19th century, leading to the hybrid varieties we know today. It is remarkable that all these hybrid varieties originated from only two wild species of Daylily.
Care
The Daylily owes its popularity to its many colors and low-maintenance care. It is a perennial plant that requires little care and grows larger in your garden through rhizomes. The Daylily also does very well in a patio pot; make sure to use a large pot with enough space so it can grow well. The Daylily can withstand drought, but do not let it dry out. It certainly needs more water during flowering. Regularly check the soil when the Daylily is in a patio pot.
Planting
Planting can be done in autumn or early spring. Add organic fertilizer or compost to the soil to ensure sufficient nutrients. Plant the Daylily in a place with plenty of sun (more than 4 hours) and in a not too dry spot in the garden. Although it is often said that the Daylily is also a partial shade plant, it truly thrives when it is in full sun. Always add compost to the soil in early spring and possibly organic fertilizer to stimulate growth.
Winter care
In winter, the Daylily requires little care and is extremely hardy. In winter, the leaves and stems die back completely; as it is a perennial plant, they will sprout again in spring. Before winter begins, place a layer of compost over the plant. This provides extra protection and nutrients for continued development. In early spring, any remnants of leaves and stems can be cut away.
Flowers
The Daylily will provide flowers with beautiful colors all summer long, depending on the variety. It is a cut flower not often used in bouquets because the flower's calyxes bloom for only 1 day. However, on a vase, the flower will continue to bloom, so you can certainly enjoy this beautiful cut flower.
The garden plants we sell at Clay & Roots are already 2 years old, so they will flower immediately in your garden during the first summer. Two to 3 stems in the first year, and the larger the plant gets in your garden and the longer you have it, the more flowers it will produce.
