About this perennial

Peony Vanilla Schnapps is one of the most beautiful peonies available. The flowers have a beautiful vanilla color. Vanilla Schnapps is still a relatively rare variety, of which we also have a very limited number available. It is also an early-flowering variety among peonies. With its beautiful foliage, sturdy flower stems and wonderfully large, full flowers, it is an asset to your garden.

Peonies grow best in the ground and are easy to care for. The plants return to your garden every year with more and more flowers.

PLANT

Always thoroughly soak fresh herbaceous plants in a bucket of water first. The plant can safely lie in the water for half an hour to an hour to replenish moisture after transport.

Do not plant the eyes of the peony deeper than 5 centimeters in the ground. If the peony is planted too deep, it will not produce flowers. In milder climates, 2 to 3 cm below the surface is recommended, so that the eyes truly experience some cold. Mixing compost into the topsoil is advisable. Be careful with fresh manure, as this can cause the core to rot.
CARE

Support your peony with a support ring for its large flowers. Fertilize the plant twice a year to stimulate growth, in autumn and in spring, after flowering. Preferably choose an organic fertilizer; this slowly feeds the plant over a longer period. In spring, also prune away any remaining leaves and stems.

In the first year after planting, there is only a small chance that your peony will bloom, as the plant will need to get used to its new location. A peony is often at its most beautiful after about 4 years, providing an abundance of flowers. It is advisable to divide the plant after about 8 or 9 years if you notice a decline in flowering. At that point, dig up and divide the plant. Replant the younger sections in a different spot in the garden. This way, your peony plant can last a lifetime!
PLACE IN THE GARDEN

Choose fertile and well-draining soil. If necessary, mix sand or compost into the soil to improve drainage. Always plant the peony in the open ground and in full sun. Make sure not to plant a peony in a spot where a peony has previously grown; choose a different location instead. The previous peony may have left behind a disease or depleted the soil.

Will I get flowers from the first year?

In the first year, you may already see a single flower, but this is not always the case. A peony always needs some time to get used to a new spot. Because we only sell peonies of the best quality, many of our customers do see a flower in the first year.

Can I plant a peony in a pot?

We do not recommend planting a peony in a pot. Peonies need space for their roots to spread, so they are best planted directly in the ground. It is always more difficult to get a peony to bloom in a pot. In a very large container, it often works, but if you have the option, planting it directly in the ground is truly the best choice.

How many flowers come from a root tuber?

The short answer: a lot! From the root tuber, the peony grows into a large perennial in a shrub-like form. In the first year, you won't have many stems and, with luck, one or a few flowers, because the plant still needs to get used to its new location. But the peony gets bigger every year and produces more and more flowers. From about 4 years old, the peony is in its mature state and then produces an abundance of flowers.

How much space should I leave for my peony?

A root tuber grows into a substantial plant within 2 to 3 years. Allocate a space of 0.8 m2 to 1 m2.

Is a peony winter hardy?

Yes, absolutely, a peony is very winter hardy and can tolerate frost well. In fact, a peony really needs a cold period to fully rest during the winter.
