About this perennial

Monsieur Jules Elie is a classic, double-flowered pink peony with a delicate fragrance. Its large blooms look stunning in your garden, as well as indoors or in a bouquet. This is also an early-flowering variety that you can enjoy in your garden early in the season.

Peonies grow best directly in the ground and prefer a sunny spot in the garden. They are easy-to-care-for perennials and return to your garden every year with more and more flowers.

PLANT

Always allow fresh land plants to fully soak in a bucket of water first. The plant can safely lie in the water for half an hour to an hour to replenish moisture after transport.

Do not plant the eyes of the peony deeper than 5 centimeters into the ground. If the peony is planted too deeply, it will not produce flowers. In milder climates, 2 to 3 cm below the ground is recommended, so that the eyes truly experience some cold. On the top layer, mixing compost into the topsoil is advisable. Be careful with fresh manure as this can cause the core to rot.
CARE

Support your peony with a support ring for the large flowers. Fertilize the plant twice a year to stimulate growth, in autumn and in spring, after flowering. Preferably choose an organic fertilizer, as this slowly nourishes the plant over a longer period. In spring, also cut away any remaining leaves and stems.

In the first year after planting, there is only a small chance that your peony will bloom, as the plant will need to get used to its new location. A peony is often at its most beautiful after about 4 years and then produces an abundance of flowers. It is advisable to divide the plant after about 8 or 9 years, if you see that flowering is decreasing. Then dig up the plant and divide it. Replant the younger parts in a different spot in the garden. In this way, your peony plant can last a lifetime!
PLACE IN THE GARDEN

Choose fertile and well-draining soil. If necessary, mix sand or compost into the soil to improve drainage. Always plant peonies directly in the ground, in full sun. Make sure not to plant a peony in a spot where one has previously grown; instead, choose a different location. The previous peony may have left behind a disease or depleted the soil.

Will I get flowers from the first year?

In the first year, you may already see a single flower, but this is not always the case. A peony always needs some time to get used to a new spot. Because we only sell peonies of the best quality, many of our customers do see a flower in the first year.

Can I plant a peony in a pot?

We do not recommend planting a peony in a pot. Peonies need space for their roots to spread, so they are best planted directly in the ground. It is always more difficult to get a peony to bloom in a pot. In a very large container, it often works, but if you have the option, planting it directly in the ground is truly the best choice.

How many flowers come from a root tuber?

The short answer: a lot! From the root tuber, the peony grows into a large perennial in a shrub-like form. In the first year, you won't have many stems and, with luck, one or a few flowers, because the plant still needs to get used to its new location. But the peony gets bigger every year and produces more and more flowers. From about 4 years old, the peony is in its mature state and then produces an abundance of flowers.

How much space should I leave for my peony?

A root tuber grows into a substantial plant within 2 to 3 years. Allocate a space of 0.8 m2 to 1 m2.

Is a peony winter hardy?

Yes, absolutely, a peony is very winter hardy and can tolerate frost well. In fact, a peony really needs a cold period to fully rest during the winter.
