CARE

The Columbine is a perennial plant that tolerates frost well. It's a robust plant that requires little care when planted directly in the ground. Fertilizing with organic fertilizer in spring is recommended. It prefers humus-rich, slightly moist soil. It will not thrive as well in full sun in an open spot. In such cases, it is necessary to keep the soil moist and provide support during flowering. If you grow it in a pot, it's also wise not to let the pot dry out, but do ensure rainwater can drain from the pot. In spring, you can prune off the seed pods if desired. If you want to prevent it from spreading throughout your garden, you can also do this immediately after flowering.

The Columbine propagates quickly from seed. Therefore, it's not unusual to find it in other parts of your garden a year later. This plant is thus very well suited for a cottage or woodland garden. After a few years, it's advisable to divide the Columbine to stimulate growth.

SPOT IN THE GARDEN

This native plant originally comes from forest areas. Therefore, the Columbine prefers humus-rich soil in a sheltered spot, not too exposed to wind. It does, however, love light, so place it in a spot with partial shade or sun. All soil types are actually suitable, as long as it's not too heavy clay, as it won't thrive in that. The Columbine also does very well in a pot. Make sure that (rain)water can drain from the pot, but also that the soil doesn't dry out too much.
