Room to grow
The peony needs space to grow. The longer the peony is in the ground, the wider it will grow. It is therefore wise to plant it in a border or garden. It is difficult to get a blooming peony in a patio pot, because there is too little space to grow. If you don't have the option to plant in a border or garden, we recommend trying a large tub.
Distance
If you plant multiple peonies together in a border, we recommend planting them 60 cm to 80 cm apart. This way you ensure that the peony has enough space to grow. Do not plant them directly next to each other, but diagonally in front and behind each other.
Planting time
The best time to plant a peony is autumn. You can compare this to other spring bloomers such as tulips and daffodils. The soil is still warm after the summer, so the rhizome can produce root hairs after planting and thus settle in your garden. This gives the peony a head start in spring! In addition, due to the rain in autumn, the peony will not dry out quickly.
Depth
Do not plant the peony too deep. The buds should be about 5 cm below the ground. If the peony is planted too deep, there is a chance that it will not produce flowers.
Location
The location is also very important. The peony loves the sun to be able to bloom and grow. Preferably full sun or partial shade, at least 4 hours of sun per day. The peony should not dry out, but it certainly does not like wet feet. If the peony is too wet, it will rot. Choose a spot in the garden with well-drained soil. You can improve the soil locally by digging a hole 30 - 40 cm deep and mixing organic fertilizer with garden soil in it.
Planting the rhizome
Have you found the right spot and are you ready to plant your peony? It is always smart to let the rhizome soak in a bucket of water for a while, especially if it looks dry. Then dig a hole where the rhizome fits well and make sure there is about 5 cm of soil on top. Finally, place a layer of compost on top of the buried rhizome, this helps prevent drying out in the spring.
