In August, many people enjoy a well-deserved holiday. Prepare your garden before you leave, so you don't return to a mess. Are you staying home this month? Then you can fully enjoy your blooming garden, as long as you also carry out the necessary maintenance. Read here what your garden needs attention for in August.

Preparation for your holiday

Of course, you can ask your neighbours to water your garden when they have time, but there are also automatic sprinkler systems available. If you often go away, or if you like long holidays, such a system is worth considering. If this is not possible and neighbours or friends are also on holiday, place your potted plants together in the shade or bury them, pot and all, in the ground. This way they dry out less quickly. Do not mow your grass shorter than usual before you leave, as it will grow back even faster.

Maintain your plants

Are you staying home this month? Then you can really enjoy your garden this month.

Everything is growing abundantly in August. Weeds also continue to grow steadily. Keep on top of this regularly, so you always remove a little bit. This way you prevent weeds from suffocating your plants or taking away important nutrients.

Also, prune spent flowers. Especially with perennials, there is often another flowering period in the autumn. With annual flowers, you extend the flowering period, because no energy is used for the production of flower seeds.

Also, pay attention to pests and take action when they take over your garden. Slugs, for example, can cause many problems. First, try natural methods to control them in your garden. For example, you can try to attract birds and frogs to your garden, as these are natural enemies of slugs. In addition, you can make a slug trap with pieces of stone in a border. Slugs like to sit in a dark, moist hiding place. You can then place the caught slugs in a place where birds can easily reach them. Do not use slug pellets, as these kill more animal species than just slugs.

Hot days

On hot days, it is best to work in your garden in the morning or evening, when it is a little cooler. It is also best to water in the evening so that the water does not evaporate immediately in the sun. Pay special attention to your plants in hanging baskets, pots and containers. These dry out quickly and need a lot of water in the summer. Also, regularly refill bird baths and ponds.

Enjoy this month in your garden and if you are going on holiday, we wish you a lot of fun in advance!
