About this perennial

The striking Dicentra (Lamprocapnos) Spectabilis is also known as the bleeding heart due to its unique flowers. This perennial adds a lot of color to that shady corner in your garden. Dicentra is also an early bloomer, so you can enjoy this lovely plant from March onwards. The flowers grow on drooping, long stems and the plant can reach up to 1.25 meters in height.

CARE

Dicentra needs sufficient water, but make sure the plant doesn't get 'wet feet' and is in well-drained soil.

To enjoy the plant for a longer period, it's important to divide it every 3 to 4 years. In winter, dig up the plant. Use a clean knife to cut the plant into pieces, removing old plant material and keeping and replanting the newer cuttings.
SPOT IN THE GARDEN

It is best not to plant Dicentra in a pot. The plant will flower, but overwintering in a pot is not always successful. The plant needs some space as it will grow larger each year, up to 50 centimetres wide. However, you should divide the plant every 3-4 years to keep it healthy, so you will then start with a smaller plant again. Choose a spot in the garden with partial shade. The plant does need some sun. Dicentra adds colour and and form to a border, combine it there for a beautiful effect with plants with large leaves, such as Hosta or Brunnera.
