About this perennial

Convallaria Majalis, known as Lily of the Valley in English, is a specialty of our nursery. The strikingly beautiful 'Hardwick Hall' variant has stunning leaves with a yellow border and the typical white bell-shaped flowers. The plant flowers every other year, and its delicate white blossoms emit a wonderful fragrance. Place this May bloomer in the shade, preferably at the base of a tree. In the wild, the plant also prefers to grow there.

Sorting these plants is an art in itself, a specialization few growers possess due to the labor-intensive process. Perhaps that is secretly why we are so fond of this beautiful plant. The flower brings happiness, or as beautifully expressed in French: 'Une porte de Bonheur'. In addition, the flowers are widely used in perfumes and in wedding bouquets.

CARE

Lily of the Valley is easy to care for when placed in the right spot in your garden with plenty of shade. As with most perennials, nutrient-rich, well-draining soil is important. Pay attention to these basics in your garden.

In the first few years, you will have flowers from the plant every other year, but as it spreads more throughout your garden and more plants form, you can count on annual blooms in the future.

The flowers will die off naturally, and you can leave them. Red berries will then form on the plant in late summer. In winter, the foliage will completely die back; you can leave it or remove it.

SPOT IN THE GARDEN

Convallaria is a poisonous plant, so be careful with young children and pets and place the plant in a clever spot in your garden.

The plant easily spreads over a larger area in your garden; this is also known as a creeping plant. This way, the plant can effectively fill an empty spot in your garden over the years. If you'd rather not have it spread, place the plant in a pot outdoors in the shade. Even then, the plant will produce plenty of flowers.

HOMEGROWN - ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND SUSTAINABLE

The plants from Kwekerij Jan (our own P9 nursery) are grown with great care. The plants are grown in organic soil and nourished without artificial fertilizers. We reuse rainwater that we have collected in our basin. We use pots made from recycled material. Every year we take steps towards more sustainable cultivation. By purchasing from our nursery, you support the development of our profession.
