Here's an update from us about everything that's been happening lately. This summer, we went on holiday, repotted new plants for autumn, and have been busy with our move. You read that right, we've moved both ourselves and our nursery!
Iris and I spent two weeks in Sweden in June, enjoying a wonderful break in a holiday home nestled in nature. It was a time to relax, read, and explore the surroundings. We both savored the Swedish tranquility and beautiful nature. There were even two cranes wandering around our holiday home!
In early July, we started repotting the perennials into p9 pots again. We do this for our own nursery, Jan. We grow the perennials for Jan's nursery without chemical pesticides, artificial fertilizers, and in organic soil from Bio-Kultura. In other words: poison-free.
We sell these perennials exclusively in the Clay & Roots webshop. From October, the perennials will be ready for dispatch and can be planted directly in the garden. We do the repotting with the help of my parents and, fortunately, with a potting machine. A fun video will be uploaded on the social media pages of @kwekerij_jan in the coming week, where you can watch this process.
It was a bit too sunny and warm at the end of June, so we first had to protect the plants with fleece cloth. The fleece cloth ensures that the sun doesn't scorch the young plants and that the plants stay moister. Some plant species have softer leaves, which we place in a tunnel with shade cloth. The plants are now growing well, and the first varieties are already starting to root through. We will occasionally send updates via our social channels on how the plants are doing.
I just mentioned it, but we've been a bit quieter these past few weeks because we were busy preparing for our move. We've moved both privately and with our business to a new location. For us, it's a big step, as we've moved from Aalsmeer in North Holland to Aalten in the Achterhoek!
At the new location, we'll have even more space to grow ourselves, allowing us to continue expanding in the coming years. The new location also offers the possibility of obtaining an organic certificate for the plants from Jan's nursery. This location is on an organic dairy farm, so the soil is already organic. For us, it's a dream come true, and we are very enthusiastic about sharing the adventure of further developing Jan's nursery with you!
Despite the hustle and bustle of the move, Iris has fortunately found the time to finish the peony guide for the new season (autumn '25 / spring '26). In addition to our regular varieties, we've been able to add a few beautiful new ones.
My personal favorite is Lorelei, mainly due to its dark coral-colored flower. Besides new varieties, we've also added old popular ones, such as Red Charm and Coral Sunset. Be sure to download the free peony guide and enjoy all the splendor of colors in the catalog again.
