1. Always plant the peony in the garden or border and do not put it in a patio pot. The plant often remains smaller in a pot and does not have enough room to grow.
2. When buying a peony, pay attention to the size of the plant and the number of roots. It has become standard to buy garden plants in containers with flowers and leaves on them, so you can enjoy them immediately in the garden. However, with peonies it is better to buy bare roots so you can see the size of the plant and roots.
3. Plant the peony in the autumn, so that the fine roots can already grow in winter and the plant gets a head start in spring. Planting garden plants in autumn might sound very strange, but the soil is still warm then, so the plant gets into a warm 'bed'. Because it rains more, the plant also gets enough water and will not dry out quickly.
4. Do not plant the peony too deep. The buds should be approx. 5 cm below the ground. If the peony is planted too deep, there is a chance that it will not produce flowers.
5. In addition to depth, the soil and the location where you plant the peony are also important for success. Find a location with plenty of sunlight and dig out the soil 30 - 90 cm. Mix organic fertilizer and lime into the hole. Place the plant in it, paying attention to the aforementioned planting depth. Then cover the plant with a layer of compost mixed with garden soil.
