In your cut flower garden, it's wise to combine perennials with annual or biennial plants. Perennials return every year and produce more flowers as they become more established. Annual and biennial plants need to be sown repeatedly according to a sowing calendar. This is quite time-consuming, and some of your seeds may not germinate well. That's why it's smart to combine them. This way, you'll have a changing selection in your cut flower garden each year by choosing different annual flowers, and you can combine them with your trusty perennials in every season.
How to choose a good perennial for your cut flower garden?
When choosing the type of perennial, a few things are important:
- Where do you want to place the plant?
- When does the plant bloom?
- What size plant do you want to buy?
- And of course, also very important: what do you find beautiful?
Plant location
Where you want to place the perennial is an important starting point for choosing a good plant. In your (future) cut flower garden, you might have a spot in mind for a perennial or a perennial border. Pay attention to two things: the condition of your soil and the amount of sun. Well-drained soil is important for every plant. Regularly enrich the soil with good compost or organic fertilizer. The amount of sun is very decisive for which plant will bloom and grow well in that spot. Make sure you choose a plant that matches this. A plant that needs full sun, like a peony, will produce few flowers in a shady corner of your garden.
When does the plant bloom?
When planning your cut flower garden, try to create a schedule so that something is in bloom every month. This way, you can keep picking flowers. Also pay attention to this when purchasing perennials. Try to combine plants that bloom in different months.
What size plant do you buy?
An important point that is often overlooked: the size of your perennial. Many perennials are sold in a P9 pot, a pot with a diameter of 9 centimeters. These are often well-priced, but the big disadvantage is that these plants still need to grow a lot before they will produce flowers. If you want faster results, choose a larger plant, like those you will primarily find in our webshop. These plants are already mature and usually two years old. This way, you'll immediately have a beautiful, large plant in your garden that will often bloom in the first year.
What do you find beautiful?
The question most cut flower gardeners start with: which flowers do you find beautiful? This is, of course, very important, because a cut flower garden whose flowers you prefer not to bring indoors isn't much fun. When choosing colors and sizes, consider where you want to place the cut flowers in your home. Which colors do you find beautiful there? And what do you like to buy from the florist? You can, of course, always find inspiration there for new plants.
When to plant perennials?
For perennials, autumn is by far the best period to move them. The plants are then in their natural dormant phase, where energy retracts into the rhizomes. These can then be harvested from the land by us as growers. When you then plant the rhizome in your garden, the soil is still warm from late summer, and you usually don't have to worry about watering due to rainfall. The perennial then already forms root hairs in its new spot in your garden. After a good winter in which the plant goes into deep rest, it can quickly grow into a beautiful, strong plant with the first spring sunshine.
